PTEROCARPUS ANGOLENSIS, known as KIAAT in South Africa, Mukwa in Zimbabwe and Zambia and also as the Fried Egg Tree due to the appearance of the pod
TEXT UPDATE
Tree
Deciduous tree growing up to 16 metres tall with dark brown bark. Very recognisable pod, which is a circular wing 8 - 12 cm diameter. Common to whole of Southern Africa.
Timber
Pterocarpus angolensis. Air and kiln dried.
Also known as Kiatt or Umbilo, this is a timber popular in South Africa for furniture making and turning. It is the softest of the African timbers we sell. With strong grain lines similar to olive but lighter in colour, this timber has a waxy texture that cuts to a shine, especially on spindle work. Bowls require fine cuts across the end grain (what bowls don’t?) for the best finish.Have not tried oils on this but with sanding sealer and paste wax, it finished to a deep shine. This is sure to be a popular timber.
